Motor racing is a very dangerous activity, and karting is certainly no different. Fitness is very important for a driver, especially if the event is an endurance race of the type that Tough Monkeys favour. Over the course of a race the body is subject to an incredibly violent experience that causes fatigue, stress and bruising. Arms are subject to tiredness as kart tyres are incredibly grippy and the steering is surprisingly heavy. Bruising is common on the sides of the torso, hips and knees from the seat and buffeting from the steering column. And although karts might not reach mind blowing speeds, the cornering forces excerted on a driver is only exceeded by the very top formulas of motorsport. This creates stresses on the neck which is trying to support your head and helmet whose weight increases greatly through G-Force under cornering and braking. Many courses, Buckmore Park included, have corners that push you down into the seat and compress the lower back, and all of these stresses combine to make sure you certainly know you've been karting when you wake up the next morning.
Despite the karters very best efforts to remain fit, we must take every effort to remain as safe as possible and do what we can to protect our bodies from all the effects described above, and of course in the event of an accident. As such, Tough Monkeys driver Craig Laws ensures that he only competes when wearing not only appropriate race wear, but race wear that is approved by the governing bodies of the sport. The contents of the kit bag don't come cheap, but can you really put a price on the health of your body?
All of Tough Monkeys' race wear can be sourced through Demon Tweeks except for the Ribtec rib protector that I sourced from the Kart Shop at Buckmore Park. Click each link below to view/buy the item.
